Mein praktisches Glossar
Welcher Übersetzer kennt das nicht? Der Abgabetermin rückt näher, weder die Wörterbücher noch die Online-Quellen geben was Vernünftiges her, die Verzweiflung wächst.
Seit Anfang meiner Übersetzertätigkeit sammele ich Begriffe und Abkürzungen in einem eigenen Glossar.
Abgesehen davon, dass es Zeit spart, enthält mein Glossar Begriffe und Abkürzungen aus allerlei Fachgebieten. Mittlerweile reden wir hier von ca. 29.000 Einträgen (Stand: März 2024)! Nur als Beispiele seien hier Bonität (creditworthiness), Boole'sche Operatoren (boolean operators) und bootfähiges Laufwerk (bootable drive) genannt; oder Riegelfeder (interlock spring), rieselfähiges Gut (loose / pourable substance), Rieselkühler (surface irrigation cooler); oder wiederum Abkürzungen wie z.B. VAL (vibration-assisted liposuction), GefStoffV (Gefahrenstoffverordnung), FBH (flat-bottomed hole) und CMGR (Coopération Musicale de la Grande Région) ...
Und das Glossar wächst immer noch täglich. Es stellt zwar keine Ansprüche auf Vollständigkeit oder Lückenlosigkeit, und schon gar nicht auf Vollkommenheit. Aber es wächst und gedeiht, wie einst die Korallenriffe, und enthält tausenderlei nützliche Hilfen!
My practical glossary
There's hardly a translator out there who is not familiar with this situation: the deadline is approaching rapidly, neither the dictionaries nor the on-line sources are suggesting anything helpful, and you're getting more and more desperate.
Since I began to work as a translator all those years ago, I've been collecting words, terms and abbreviations in a glossary of my own.
Apart from saving time, my glossary contains terms and abbreviations from a great variety of fields. Meanwhile we're talking about approx. 29,000 entries (as of March 2024): just a few examples would be Bonität (creditworthiness), Boole'sche Operatoren (boolean operators) and bootfähiges Laufwerk (bootable drive); or Riegelfeder (interlock spring), rieselfähiges Gut (loose / pourable substance) and Rieselkühler (surface irrigation cooler); or abbreviations such as VAL (vibration-assisted liposuction), GefStoffV (Ordinance on Hazardous Substances), FBH (flat-bottomed hole) and CMGR (Coopération Musicale de la Grande Région).
And the glossary keeps on growing, day by day. I'm a long way from claiming that it covers everything, and a long way from claiming that it's perfect. But it keeps on growing as the coral reefs used to do, and has thousands of useful solutions to offer!
